What do you consider as self-service?

I often wonder if we know and have an exact definition of self-service in BI.

In a star hotel, we are supplied with espresso, sugar and some milk. The expectation is that we would mix it in the desired proportion to have the coffee of our choice.

In Starbucks, we make many choices to get what we want ; but they make it for us. We just help ourselves with the drink to our table.

Out of the above two, which one is self-service and what is convenient? I am sure the answers would change from person to person.

Coming to BI -self-service I see the same dilemma applies and IT may have the following questions.

  • Should I prepare and keep the data ready to the finest point to allow my users come and simply consume what they look for?
  • Should I also allow them to enrich the data at their will…
